How To Stain A Fence

Y’all staining a fence can be an overwhelming project. We have stained several over the years, and every time we finish the project, we say we are never doing this again. But here I am, writing about staining our fence. Fence staining is expensive, so when it comes down to it, I just can’t justify paying someone a couple thousand dollars when I can do it myself. Is that prideful? Probably. Will that someday bite me in the butt? Probably.

In the meantime, let me walk you through the easiest way to stain your fence, so you can save a couple thousand dollars.

Before you start staining your fence, you need to make sure it is power washed. You can check out my post on power washing here. If you don’t have a power washer, I highly recommend investing in one. They are not super expensive, you will get your money out of it, and if you are a weirdo like me, power washing will bring you some weird sense of satisfaction. This is the power washer we use in our home.

Once you are finished power washing, then you can start staining.

How To Stain A Fence

Supplies:

Stain and Sealer (We used Ready Seal Stain in Mission Brown)

Large Paint Brush

Paint Sprayer (low cost version and nicer version)

Directions:

1. Using the paint brush, stain the areas of the fence around the house and any metal that you do not want covered in stain.

2. Fill the paint sprayer with the stain, and begin staining the rest of the fence.

3. Use the paint brush to spread extra stain in certain areas or areas that are hard to reach with the sprayer.

4. You will likely have to do two coats of stain to make sure the area is covered completely.
