Rental Design Tips

The past couple weeks I have been helping my sister design some of the spaces for her new apartment. Usually when I am doing DIY and design, I am working on homes that people own, so there are usually an endless amount of opportunities to make a house a home. Apartments are a little bit of a different story.

Apartments have good bones and have everything that most people need, but they are usually void of all personality. Since rental situations are temporary, every design in an apartment has to be temporary. This can limit the character and design you bring into the space, but if you get creative, there are a lot of beautiful things you can do to a temporary space. These are my best tips for creating a beautiful design in a temporary apartment space.

1. Removable Wallpaper

Wallpaper is making a come back y’all! And I am so here for it. There are tons of beautiful removable wallpaper options that you can hang up and remove when it is time for you to move to your next place. If you love some pattern in your designs, this is the perfect option to add some character and personality to your rental. I have linked some of my favorites below.

2. Curtains

Most apartments have builder grade blinds. While those do a great job of blocking out the sunlight, they don’t always look great. Adding some statement curtains to your space adds color, personality, and dimension to an otherwise sterile space. These can also do double duty by blocking out all the light if you use black out curtains. I have linked my favorite curtain rod and curtains below.

3. Paint

Some rental places will allow you to paint. Double check with your landlord or apartment complex before painting any walls. Most places will allow you to paint walls if it makes improvement to the place. Even if it doesn’t, you might be able to paint for a small fee when you move out or by painting the place back to the original color when you move out. My favorite paint company these days is Clare. Their paint has awesome coverage, they have great colors, and it is not overwhelming to pick your favorite color because they have curated their collection so perfectly. I have linked my favorite colors from Clare below.
